February’s guest speaker is Monica Laita, freelance Illustrator, Animator and Painter based in London.

Born in Italy, as a child, Monica dreamed of opening an ice cream shop, but after carrying off the top prize in a drawing competition aged 6, her aspirations soon moved towards a more creative career. She grew up in Paris where she first studied Fashion Design at Studio Bercot and then went on to study Graphic Design and Animation at Central Saint Martins in London.

She is now represented by New Division in London, Vapeurs in Paris and Aareps in New York. She has worked for corporate and editorial clients around the world including British Telecom, Garnier, Kiss FM, MTV-Ice Breakers, Virgin, Marks&Spencer, Penguin Books and magazines such as Vogue Publications, FHM, Cosmopolitan UK-NY, Cosmo Girl NY, Elle Girls, MarieClaire, New Woman, Time Out, J17 and Company.

Monica still finds it difficult to stop her passion to change the mundane into her vision of glamour and she will be sharing her creative inspiration as well as demonstrating how she uses Adobe software in her work. This will include collage and re-touching techniques in Photoshop and how to integrate Photoshop with Flash to produce animatics and rich, textural backgrounds.

Applications are invited from artists of all disciplines, working in illumination. If your work glows or lights up in any way, we want to here from you. The theme is alternative Christmas; this can be broadly investigated and is left wide open for your creativity and imagination.

Crypt-mas will be a free alternative Christmas art experience, in December 2010, for all ages, created inside a subterranean labyrinth. The venue is a dark underground church crypt, with alcoves and arched ceilings, the fantastic setting and atmosphere, for an alternative Christmas grotto. Including children’s workshops and Illumini’s very own futuristic Santa (art Installation)

Illumini Event, Sep 2008, attracted over 3,000 people on its opening night and 7,145 guests during its two weeks. Artist’s from professionals-students gained commissions, sales and major press coverage and interviews through Illumini. Adobe Inspired Media

January’s guest speaker is Steve Caplin, a freelance London-based Graphic Artist who specialises in satirical photomontage. His work appears regularly in British newspapers (including The Guardian, The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent) and magazines (including Radio Times, Financial Times magazines, Reader’s Digest and many others). He is also a contributing editor to MacUser magazine, and is a beta tester for Adobe software.

His advertising work has included commissions from Saatchi & Saatchi, Lowe Howard Spink, M&C Saatchi and Bartle Bogle Hegarty, for which he has won two Campaign Poster Awards and a D&AD award.

Steve’s work has been covered in feature articles in Creative Technology, What Digital Camera, Computer Arts and the Journal of Digital Photography, as well as in chapters in The New Mac Designer’s Handbook by Alastair Campbell, and Digital Photography by Tom Ang. He also lectures on Photoshop techniques and the ethics of photomontage.He is the author of several books, including How to Cheat in Photoshop, How to Cheat in Photoshop Elements, Icon Design, Art & Design in Photoshop, and the Complete Guide to Digital Illustration.How non-technical books include Dad Stuff and Complete & Utter Zebu.

Steve will be showing photomontage and compositing techniques using Photoshop.

inIVA present Harsha’s “Nations”installation comprising of 192 flags which represent the number of countries that make up the membership of the United Nations. The flags are draped over a similar number of treadle sewing machines.

This impressive large scale installation ,fills the whole space from floor to ceiling and consists of a spider web like mass of multi coloured threads. Using flags as a symbol represents the sense of belonging, identity,social and polititical histories, and the shared cultural connectivity between the countries.

At Victoria Miro Gallery  Harsha shows “Picking through the Rubble” which consist of new paintings and an installation. The themes conveyed are political and social narratives, which draw on both traditional and popular cultures. The site- specific installation comprises of integrated painting and sculptural elements.

October’s speaker is Matt West, lead animator and production manager at Cartoon Network.  He trained in traditional animation at Central Saint Martin’s, and has since worked extensively in Flash, animating on series for the BBC (Monkeydust, Charlie and Lola), Channel 4 (The Blue Dragon), Nickelodeon (Terrible Tim) and most recently Cartoon Network, where he was lead animator on Skatoony, a hit show mixing animation with live action. 
He won the BBC New Animation Award in 2002, and is the author of Making an Animated Film: A Practical Guide.
 

Matt will be talking about the different ways Flash is used to make TV animation, and how it can be combined with Illustrator and After FX to produce different results.

* “Currents of Time” is a new work by artist Zineb Sidera  whose films reflect her interest in migration, mobility and displacement. The themes resonate with her own background of Algerian immigrant parents who fled their homeland to Paris due to war.

Her most recent film “Floating Coffins” (2009) is  presented as a 14 screen video installation and 10 speakers which envelops the viewer and enhances the experience on a profound level. Alongside these there are 2 other installations with light boxes and photographs.

This exhibition is on until 25th July 2009, and has been curated by arts organisation  inIVA (Institute of International Visual Arts), who are based in Rivington St, London EC1.

In addition to this at inIVA’s Education space there are a series of mapping exhibitions “Off the Map” which presents work produced in the 2009 Creative Mapping Projects. These projects explore the potential of a new cartographic language using social issues of identity and location.

This exhibition is on until 11th July 2009 and will change on a weekly basis

* “The Golden Space City of God” – Richard Grayson

Matts Gallery in E3 presents a large scale video installation with sound conceived and directed by artist Richard Grayson, which features a new choral work performed by a 26 piece choir based in San Antonio Texas.

The score composed by Leo Chadburn is based on a limbretto by the artist which appear as subtitles in the video work. It is based on texts  that give detailed prediction of events leading to the end of the world, drawn from the Bible’s Book of Revelations. This re-imagined fictional piece describes the widespread economic and social unrest that will spread across the globe folllowing an oil crisis and the collapse of dollar-based economies.

This work very relevant in today’s credit crunching climate of financial chaos and parliamentary collapse……

After a vast 2 year expansion project aquiring the neighbouring Whitechapel Library, there are now 9 Galleries including an Archive gallery with research facilities and Reading Room; a newly revamped funky cafe/bar designed with bamboo interiors; project spaces showing local community-based works; educational resources for local schools/ teachers/artists with the Study Studio and 2 Creative Studios; a Bookshop and the new Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room.

There is something suitable for every taste and all ages. The galleries will be open throughout the year, so there will always be something to see or do with Poetry and music evenings, film screenings, gallery talks/events with a new addition of  Theatre plays.

Exhibition highlights include, a retrospective of  monumental sculptural works by German artist Isa Genzken; commissioned work by Turner prize nominee Goshka Macuga, which re-visits a moment in the Whitechapel’s history of showing Picasso’s Guernica  in 1939; a British Council collection of early buys of works by artists including Lucian Freud;  Sarah Lucas; Damian Hirst; Gilbert & George and Chris Ofili.

Also showing are films by Ursula Mayer in the Auditorium;  The Whitechapel Boys; Archive Adventures; Minerva Cuevas’  ”Scoop” project; Social Sculptures by artists including Franz West, Juergan Teller and Andrew Grassle.
